Gluten Free Sweet Potato Brownies

I have been in the baking mood for the past couple of months. Always trying out new recipes, and making huge flops of them, of course! The last couple of days I have been on the hunt for an easy fudgy type recipe. Now the first issue I have with the recipes: there is a ridiculous amount of coconut oil going into these fudge recipes. Now I am all for coconut oil and the amazing benefits, but it is still oil, which means FAT. So basically all these fudge recipe are just high fat.

The second issue that I have is my flatmate. Even though I love her dearly, her peanut allergy makes it impossible for me to find a fudge recipe, since all the fudge recipes has nuts in them! (Even though I think it’s good that she is allergic to nuts, or else we would just never have peanut butter in the house).

So a few months ago, flatmate and I bought ourselves Kayla Itsines’ 28 Day Healthy Eating & Lifestyle Guide. To anyone who does not have this book yet, what are you even doing?? There are such amazing recipes inside of this book, I use this book about every second day and I am always finding new recipes I want to try. So last night I went through the sweet treats and came across a delicious Sweet Potato Brownie Recipe! Yay! Finally! Something new I can try! I edited this recipe according to my flatmate’s needs (nut free) and I added some protein powder (because gainz).

You are welcome to also edit the recipe if you wish, I am sure it would taste amazing with some nuts, maybe add some chocolate chips (you can never have enough chocolate). Give it a try and let me know how it tastes!

Delicious Gluten Free, Nut Free Sweet Potato Brownie:

(Makes 16 brownies)

Ingredients:

2 Medium Sweet Potatoes

60g Protein Powder of choice

1 tsp Cinnamon

10 Medjool Dates

1/3 Cup Cocoa Powder

1/8 Cup Honey / Maple Syrup

Method:

  1. Peel the sweet potatoes and steam until soft. Mash up sweet potatoes in a bowl.
  2. Place dates in warm water for a few minutes until softened, then chop up.
  3. Place all ingredients in a food processor and blend!
  4. Bake for about 20 minutes.

Why I Started Using Herbalife

Everyone has their own opinion about Herbalife, including me. I have been on a “Shake Diet” a few years ago. This is where you replace two meals a day (usually breakfast and lunch) with a meal replacement shake. Believe me, I also know this is terrible! I will not name the brand that I was using, but it did result in me almost fainting at work. How embarrassing! Needless to say, that was my last day of ever taking shakes! My own fault for buying the cheapest shake on the market!

A short while ago, an Accountability Partner from Herbalife contacted me. Initially, I didn’t know she was from Herbalife. She just heard me ranting about my belly fat, as usual! She contacted me with regards to a body assessment. I went to her house, she put me on her amazing scale, which gives you all the body readings you need. (Body fat %, muscle mass, etc.)

Afterwards, she explained to me what all these measurements mean and gave me some more info on Herbalife. We got talking about my job and how I would love a few extra hours in my day to spend with loved ones (and waste some time on the internet, like we all do). She explained to me what exactly an Accountability Partner is and how I can also become one in order to make some extra income.

Just like many of you guys, I was really sceptical about Herbalife (especially with my previous experience drinking cheap meal replacements). So I decided to try the 5 Day Challenge. Basically, you get some friends to join and start a WhatsApp group. In this WhatsApp group, there are three other health coaches that guide you to healthy eating. All you have to do is, drink a shake in the morning and eat normally for the rest of the day. Post pictures of your meals and you either get a “well done” from the health coaches, or a “try adding more protein/carbs to your meal”. Simple as that.

I personally enjoyed this 5 Day Challenge a lot. So much, I invited some more friends and I am doing another 5 Day Challenge this week. I also joined the 21 Day Challenge, where you only post your brekkie and in return, you receive some general healthy tips. So this is basically my Herbalife Review.

Herbalife vs Whey Protein

I am still using my Whey Protein, but I do enjoy Herbalife for breakfast, especially during the week. I compared Herbalife with the protein that I am currently using (Not putting in the brand of Whey Protein as I still love the product that I am using and will keep on using it).

There’s a pretty little table for you, but what does this all mean? According to the FDA (follow link to see in detail explanation of reading food labels), you need to limit fat, cholesterol and sodium. (I do not completely agree with the fat, as you do need fat in your diet, but healthy fat, such as peanut butter or avo’s). You need to get enough carbs, dietary fibre, vitamins, calcium and iron. So you can create your own opinion regarding the nutritional values in the table above.

Next, what the whey protein above does not have is the following: (this is a picture of the Herbalife Formula 1 shake that I am currently taking)

Over here, you can see all the vitamins and minerals listed that are not in the Whey Protein. Your body needs all these nutrients, especially in the morning since you use up all your nutrients in your sleep. Now do not get me wrong, I will not be able to drink a shake everyday for breakfast, so sometimes when I feel like having oats, I have my oats. Instead of adding protein powder like I used to, I add the shake powder. I also love adding some banana or oats to my shake to make it a thicker consistency. The girls on the WhatsApp group also shared this amazing protein pancake recipe! I would love to have it everyday if I could! P.S: there is also a Herbalife Protein Shake for those interested.

The thing about these shakes are, they are a complete fully balanced meal and that is why you can replace 2 meals with the shake if you do feel like it. These shakes are so filling. They keep me full for at least 3 to 4 hours! I am not trying to sell a product to anyone, this post is not sponsored, it’s just me telling you what I found. It’s not all about weight loss, it is living a healthy, balanced lifestyle.

Scheckter’s Raw Review

I had the amazing opportunity to have brunch here with a good foodie friend of mine. (By “foodie friend” I mean she loves food just as much as I love it!) We decided on Scheckter’s Raw because 1, it’s on the Entertainer App, so buy one get one (yes please!) and 2, we are always trying to find all the healthy places to dine at.

We have been speaking about coming here for a while now as we really wanted to try out the Flapjacks, but it is not available on the Entertainer App (only main meals) and I refuse to pay R80 for flapjacks! So what is the next best choice? BURGERS!!!

Okay so first, lets start on the drinks. As it was a cold rainy day, we decided on coffee. I had an Organic Americano. It was so tasty and warmed me up from the inside. I think they use their own brand of organic coffee so brownie points to you guys! My friend had the Mocha Latte and it looked amazing! It came with such a cute cup, I literally wanted to take it home with me!

Okay, onto the burgers. OMG. I do not have words for this. So when the burgers arrived, all I saw was the black bun. I didn’t want to tell my friend, but the only thing that I was thinking was “no ways I am eating black bread”. I was pleasantly surprised though! It honestly tasted like “normal” bread, just not as heavy as “normal” bread. We had the CVC (Cajun Vegan Chicken), the “chicken patty” tasted amazing. Honestly, if you gave me that and told me it’s chicken, I would totally believe you. The BBQ sauce that they used was so flavourful and worked amazing with the huge chunk of avo on the burger.

The burgers came with sweet potato fries, which we all know is definitely my fav. The fries tasted like they were baked, not fried, which is a little better than oily chips (even though oily chips are good on their day). The vegan aioli that accompanied the fries were just amazing! I wanted to lick out the little serving of aioli! They also sell small pots of the vegan aioli.

Before we came, I read some reviews on Zomato which said that the service was a little slow. I am not going to lie to you, the service is slow, but once your order is in things go quick!

I would definitely be back as I really want to try the Thai Red Curry, the flapjacks (when I am rich enough) and the smoothies (on a warmer day)!  They also have delicious, clean desserts which includes Snickers Bars, Cheesecakes and Oreos to name a few. These desserts go for R55 each. That is a little pricey for a girl on a budget hey!

But anyways, good job guys! Keep up the good work, I will see you again soon!

Osumo Review

Anyone who knows me, knows that I am literally obsessed with Osumo.

I actually remember my first time there. My flatmate and I wanted to go to Kauai, but we walked passed Osumo and decided to just take a look at the menu. Flatmate was really amped for this, but I did have my heart set on Kauai. Fortunately for her, I am an impulsive person, so I decided to give it a try. After this day, my life changed. Osumo is all I want!

Osumo is located in Canal Walk, Cavendish Square, Sea Point as well as Green Point. What I love the most about them, is that they like to stick to the basics. They strive to create a well-balanced lifestyle with regards to eating (especially fast food). The staff is always friendly and happy to wait patiently if you simply cannot decide between all the yummy food choices!

For a year I was so in love with the Vanilla Chilla smoothie, but my favorite now is the Almond Coffee smoothie. When it comes to the food, I do not have a favorite. I absolutely love The Flinstone (it has bacon in), or if I want something more plain, I have the Roasted Butternut & Danish Feta. You can decide if you want it in a salad, wrap or sandwich. Last week I actually tried the Sunflower Power Wrap. It has chickpeas with salad things and a delicious soy sauce and olive oil dressing! Definitely a must try for the veggie lovers!

I do encourage everyone to give Osumo a try. Take that risk that I did, you might be pleasantly surprised! The menu is available on their website if you want to check it out beforehand. I literally haven’t had anything bad from the menu, and I have had almost everything! From wraps to salads even to the stir fry! Next I’m definitely trying their Chocolate Pod Oats, because chocolate is life as we all know.

Futurelife Smart Oats Review

It happens to all of us. You were looking forward to have some delicious stovetop oats for breakfast. Sadly, you overslept and you’re running around like a crazy person! You practically shower in like 30 seconds, just grab your things and run out!

Okay, so before this happens again, go to your closest shop and buy yourself some Futurlife Smart Oats. Futurelife sent me some of their products as I am a super fan of the Futurelife Lite Bars. They sent me the Apple Cinnamon flavour and I absolutely loved it! The Apple Cinnamon flavour is not too overwhelming. Just enough and well balanced. I topped my brekkie with some banana and peanut butter for added healthiness (you know what they say, a day without peanut butter is a day wasted!) It’s also so easy to make! You simply add some hot water or milk and there you go.


I feel like the above isn’t that much motivation for you to buy the cereal, so let me tell you the technical things:

  • Futurelife Smart Oats provide you with all the good vitamins and nutrients you need.
  • It’s high in dietary fibre.
  • The oats assists in lowering cholesterol levels.
  • It contains some good electrolytes (calcium and magnesium).
  • It’s soy, nut, wheat, lactose, trans-fatty acids and cholesterol free! (What a mouthful)
  • Nutritional info:
  1. Per 50g, it contains 177 calories (742 kJ)
  2. 4.5g of protein
  3. 3.1g of fat
  4. 33g of carbs, of which 7.6g is sugar
  5. 4.9g of dietary fibre

My opinion on the nutritional values: I personally feel that the protein can be a little higher, but you can always add some protein powder of choice if you feel like it. I’m definitely trying that next time. I would also like to reduce the sugar a little bit, but I also feel like it 7.6g isn’t a ridiculous amount. The fibre is a good amount as you need 25g of fibre a day.

So please try it out. Let me know how it tastes! I would also love to try all the other flavours!

Homemade Hangover Cure

We are all guilty of this. You’ve had a tough week, you cannot wait until Friday to see your friends and relax. So what happens? Usually in my case, my friends invite me for a braai (or Barbecue for the Americans).

So the process goes as follow: I finish work, stop by the shop, buy myself a bottle of wine, snacks for the braai (usually popcorn) and any sides needed. We get there, I have a glass of wine and dig into the chips! By the time the chips are finished, it’s about 8pm and I am stuffed. The boys are having such a good time, they don’t even realise that none of us have actually eaten a good meal. By the time they do realise this, it’s after 10pm already. They start to prepare the braai for the food, put the meat on and we only eat at after 11pm.

Next, everyone gets tired and we all go home with full tummies and feeling sick. The next morning we wake up feeling terrible. People tell you to have a greasy meal afterwards, but that is actually the worst thing you can do. Feeling this one too many times, I decided to do some research regarding foods to eat the next day. Here is what I found:

1. Bananas

The first thing that most websites lists are bananas. Bananas are easy to digest and they contain pectin, which firms up loose stools.

2. Ginger and Cinnamon

Ginger relieves nausea as well as vomiting. Add some fresh ginger to herbal tea, with some lemon and honey in order to mask the flavour. Add some cinnamon to toast or oats.

3. Yoghurt

Most people advice you not to have any diary while having an upset stomach, but plain yoghurt helps to balance out the stomach and restores all the good bacteria in the tummy.

4. Eggs

Eggs are filled with amino acids, such as cysteine and taurine. Cysteine assists in breaking down acetaldehyde while Taurine boosts liver function – remember, your liver worked pretty hard last night!

I found all of this so interesting, but I wanted to create a quick and easy recipe to fight the hangover blues. Something that you can quickly get up and make, and slip right back into bed and rest for another hour or so.

Easy Hangover Cure:

Ingredients:

1/2 cup oats

1/2 teaspoon honey

1 banana

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

Method:

  1. Add oats to a bowl with some warm water. (Enough to cover oats and a little more)
  2. Microwave for 1 min 30 seconds.
  3. Add cinnamon to oats and mix.
  4. Slice banana in coins and add it on top of the oats. Add some honey to sweeten it a little.
  5. To drink, have some herbal tea (I drink green tea) add some lemon juice and honey (optional) to sweeten.

Yuzu Review

Some days, you want something that you are familiar with. Pizza, burgers and all that kinds of comfort food. Other days, you might feel adventurous, try something that you have never eaten in your life before. The issue? You don’t want to pay a lot of money for this “something new”. What if it doesn’t taste good? So when I heard Yuzu had an opening special, of course I had to go try it!

The special: 1/2 price sushi and R99 for a bowl of Ramen and a drink. We decided to try the sushi as well as the ramen. The sushi is quite pricey, but the portions are huge!We had the Tuna and Avo Maki and the Salmon and Avo Onigirazu. It was 8 pieces in total, which fiancé and I shared. I only managed to have 3 pieces! I promise you guys, the portions are huge, but so good!

So next up: the ramen. We were both really scared, but really excited to try this new dish. The verdict: when are we having ramen again!? It was amazing! The ramen consisted of a soft boiled egg, udon noodles, spring onion, toasted sesame seeds, chinese leaf and bean sprouts in a lemongrass broth. I went for the chicken option, thinking it would be a little healthier. The chicken was deep fried (but lets be honest everything deep fried is good anyways). The flavours are amazing! I absolutely loved the noodles as well as the lemongrass broth. Again, the portions were huge. Neither of us could finish the bowl of food!

I definitely recommend this place for anyone who wants to try something new. Especially since they have a special. Support this new restaurant guys! You will be pleasantly surprised, I promise!
